Guided Biofilm Therapy

Dental hygiene treatment is delivered by a dentist who will, amongst other things, help to remove any hard-to-reach plaque from your teeth that may have built up over time.

Skye Dental
Guided Biofilm Therapy
Here is what you can expect from a hygiene appointment:
  1. Your teeth and gums will be assessed to determine the amount of plaque removal required and any associated risk factors will be explained.
  2. Your teeth will be professionally cleaned with special equipment and pastes. This process is also known as Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), which is a more modern and effective type of “scale and polish”.
  3. The dentist’s role is to then show you how to look after your teeth so that they remain plaque-free in the future. You will be advised on the best tooth brushing technique and given tips on flossing and using interdental brushes.

Dental hygiene at our practice also functions preventively to treat gum disease and bad breath. If you have a bridge, denture, orthodontic treatment or a dental implant you may have specific hygiene needs that the dentist will be able to assist you with.

It is recommended that you come in for regular hygiene appointments to ensure your mouth stays clean and healthy.

Guided Biofilm Therapy
Benefits of Visiting the Dentist for a scale and polish
  • Helps to minimise the risk of tooth loss.
  • Reduces the risk of developing tooth decay and the associated need for fillings.
  • Provides you with fresh, minty breath and helps with avoiding bad breath in the future.

An appointment with a dentist for scale and polish may last between 20 to 45 minutes..

The dentist will dye the plaque on the teeth to highlight any areas missed when brushing or flossing and will offer appropriate oral hygiene advice to supplement a patient’s daily oral hygiene regime. A dentist will measure the gaps between gums and teeth with a rounded probe to explore whether any periodontal disease is present and will undertake any treatment necessary to prevent the disease from progressing. The gum condition will be monitored by the dentist to ensure regular oral maintenance. They will also encourage regular three to six monthly scaling and polishing to ensure the routine maintenance of healthy gums.
